Civil liberties cannot be defended selectively

An interesting overview on the destruction of Civil Liberties since the Second World War by theThe Social Affairs Unit. However it should be noted that most of the destruction has happened quite recently (under Blair) and the rate is increasing. Certainly up until the end of the sixties people where getting freedoms that they had never had the chance of before:
the freedom to get out of a marrage that turns out to be a mistake,
the freedom to avoid getting your life destroyed to by a pregnacy that was a mistake (or that you had no choice in),
the freedom to not be dependent on your husband and go out and work (admittedly the socialist polices of the 70's ment that their wasn't much work to get),
the freedom to express love towards people of the same gender,
and an education system that allowed people that could never afford it before the freedom to learn and improve themselves (this one is of course was dismantled first by Blair and co. who all benefitted from it).

However the general thrust of hte argument it correct, all Civil Liberties must be defended, as once lost it is very difficult to get them back and it generally leads to the loss of even more (the reverse direction, a new freedom leading to even more new freedoms, is a lot weaker).
